Chapter 5- Sentenced

Serafina makes her way down to the fishing cave after receiving a message from Emanuel. She makes a note to reward him for all of his hard work.

Emanuel tells her all about what he saw when he was returning from his jobs. He tells her about Nina’s unborn child and Don’s betrayal.

Serafina is taken aback when she hears what happened. She feels bad for Nina, but she has a responsibility within the tribe and Serafina must punish both of them.

She immediately calls a tribe meeting. Don seems to be getting defensive already.

When Serafina shares the news with her tribe, Don gets even angrier. Nina is in shock and isn’t quite sure what to say.

Serafina raises her voice for the first time, causing Don to cower and Nina to feel guilty. She decides to leave the punishments up to Dina as Warrior of the tribe.

While Dina mulls over her decisions, Katrina makes sure to celebrate Ademar’s birthday. She chooses to let the Creator rest after the intense meeting.

Serafina tries her best to focus on her skills, but she can’t help but wonder if she rushed her second baby.

It is time for Dina to announce the punishments and she calls everyone to a pit of water near the slave quarters.

Dina has already prepared Nina for hers- she now wears black and has had her hair cut off.

She announces that, for their betrayal of the tribe, Don will be sacrificed and, after giving birth, Nina will be banished. Serafina knows that in most tribes, Nina would also be sacrificed. She keeps quiet and respects Dina’s decision, knowing that it is only because they are sisters.

If anything, she admires Dina for stepping up to her role, especially in a situation like this.
